Welcome to the School of Mission & Ministry. Laidlaw College has been preparing men and women to serve the church and the world for nearly 88 years. The College has developed a range of programmes that are rich in practical experience and in-depth theoretical knowledge. You might find yourself:
  • studying in our internship programme while you continue your church ministry;
  • taking time out for a gap year to strengthen and reinforce your faith before going on to University study;
  • preparing to participate in missions in New Zealand and around the world.

As a student enrolled in one of the Mission & Ministry programmes you will find yourself submersed in the world of Scripture and the Church. You will gain the tools to translate the Gospel into action in the areas of social justice, reconciliation, community transformation and personal formation - just to name a few. Diploma of Biblical Studies

Programme Summary

This programme is designed to elevate a student's effectiveness and influence in a wide variety of fields. It develops students to:

  • understand the scriptures withing their wider historical context
  • develop personal spiritual growth through biblical study and personal mentoring
  • engage in voluntary leadership opportunities such as Children and Families worker, Youth worker or Missionary
  • connect theological and historical studies to all of life.

Students can also choose from a variety of elective courses to complete their credit requirements. In effect, the student can customise the programme to suit their interests. Elective courses are available in:

  • children and families ministries
  • youthwork
  • pastoral care
  • mission
  • spiritual formation
  • evangelism
  • preaching

Also available are:

  • Internship opportunities. Gain work experience and study at the same time.

The above courses are compulsory for this qualification. To complete the diploma, students must achieve at least 120 credits. The Academic Calendar provides a complete list of available courses.


Students who successfully complete this qualification may transfer their credits into the Bachelor of Ministries or Theology Programme. Students graduating from this programme have become youth workers, youth pastors, Bible in schools teachers, outdoor instructors and missionaries, to name but a few.

Programme Summary

The bilingual Tongan/English Diploma in Ministry Internship is an expression of the diversity present at Laidlaw College. This programme is similar to the Internships available in the Diploma of Biblical Studies and the Bachelor of Ministries, offering a hands-on approach to ministry in the Tongan context. 

Students investing three years in this programme will reap a lifetime of dividends. Internship is about translation. Students enrolled in the Ministry Internship programme will develop the ability to think biblically and theologically about the issues they face in all of life, and expand their ability to integrate theological reflection with ministry experience.

Alongside their Supervised Internship Experience, students will focus their studies in the following areas:

  • Biblical Studies
  • Theology
  • Church History
  • Christian Thought.

Students can expect to be evaluated in their:

  • approach and attitude towards ministry
  • ability to express themselves
  • ability to discuss theological and practical issues related to ministry.

Admission Requirements

This programme is designed for students who are fluent in the Tongan language and who also have English language competency appropriate to the desired level of study. Applicants will be interviewed by the Programme Coordinator and must demonstrate fluency in the Tongan language in speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. Programme Summary

The Bachelor of Ministries is for engaged learners desiring to make powerful connections between the biblical text and the context in which they live. This is a unique qualification combining practical fieldwork with academic learning. The aim of this programme is to take students into a deeper level of understanding through personal, spiritual and theological integration. This experience will prepare them for a life of greater influence.

Students enrolled in this programme will experience four main areas of study. These areas include: Biblical Studies, Christian Thought and History, Mission and Ministry, and Formation and Praxis. Students will be required to complete a major in Formation and Praxis and a minor in Biblical Studies. As with all of Laidlaw’s degree programmes, students must also complete core courses in Biblical Theology, Ways of Knowing, Worldview, and Formation.

 

The degree consists of two parts:

Part A

Part A consists of 120 credits which must be completed before proceeding to Part B. Part A is made up of the following papers:

140.515 New Testament: Introduction 401.515 Formation

plus two further 15 credit papers

Part B

In Part B students select papers which enable the completion of a Major of 135 credits in one field and the minimum requirements in the other fields. The Programme Guide below lists the requirements of each Major which are to be fulfilled after the completion of Part A.
