Welcome new lecturer John de Jong
We’re delighted to have Dr John de Jong join the Laidlaw faculty in 2018. John is a graduate of this College – first completing a Bachelor of Ministries degree at what was then Bible College of New Zealand (BCNZ) in 1997. After graduation he travelled to India to use his skills as a builder in a micro-hydro electricity project. While in the region, he spent three weeks visiting a BCNZ friend in her home country of Myanmar. On arrival he was asked by her brother-in-law, a church leader and Bible College lecturer, to spend a week teaching Hebrew to some Bible College students. That visit led to a call from God to return and help train Christian workers in this nation where the Church is experiencing strong growth.
In preparing for full-time overseas ministry, John did a two-year internship with his church and then a further two years working for the church in a variety of capacities. He also commenced part-time studies towards a Master of Theological Studies. It wasn’t all work and study – John met Rebecca and they married in 2001.
John returned to Myanmar to teach Biblical Studies on short term mission stints, with the couple going together for a month after their marriage. Finally in 2005 John and Rebecca, with a 2 year old and 10 month old in tow, moved to Myanmar where John was involved in theological education for the next 12 years. During that time John completed his MTS, and then an Old Testament PhD through Laidlaw-AUT. With two more children born while they were overseas, Rebecca had a full-time role home-schooling, as well as involvement in women’s and children’s ministry in their local church.
Now back to settle the family in New Zealand, John is looking forward to this new chapter. He’ll be teaching Hebrew 1 and 2, and Intercultural Studies in Semester One, and then Old Testament Wisdom and part of the Gospel and Culture course in Semester Two. Welcome John!
