ABOUT US & OUR COUNSELLING PROGRAMME
Laidlaw College is the largest Christian higher education college in Aotearoa New Zealand. As an interdenominational, private training establishment, we offer quality education in theology, counselling and education, with two national campuses in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland and Ōtautahi Christchurch.
Our three-year Bachelor of Counselling (BCouns) degree prepares students to become a registered counsellor with either the New Zealand Association of Counsellors or the New Zealand Christian Counsellors Association. With Christian thought and practice integrated throughout, and with a uniquely immersive mix of classroom, practicum, group and mentored learning, the BCouns is for those who want to build a career in counselling, or those who want to develop lifelong skills for working with people.
LEADERSHIP AND LECTURING OPPORTUNITIES
The work location for these roles could be at either our Auckland and Christchurch campuses, with travel between the two campuses required.
The start date will be negotiated with successful applicants, with a preferred commencement by February 2027.
HEAD OF COUNSELLING
We are seeking an inspirational and experienced leader to serve as our next Head of Counselling. This role stewards a Christian counselling education programme with a well-regarded reputation for developing safe, effective, and deeply reflective practitioners. The programme uniquely integrates Christian theology with counselling theory and practice, in the context of Aotearoa New Zealand.
As Head of Counselling, you will have the opportunity to contribute to and influence key institutional decisions and strategy, as part of the Senior Leadership Team. You will lead academic and practicum staff, ensure programme coherence, represent Laidlaw externally, and contribute to teaching and research.
LECTURERS
In addition to a Head of Counselling, we are seeking expressions of interest for Counselling Lecturer roles. These could be full or part-time positions. You will be looking to join a team who combine a strong sense of mission with the academic mind and educational heart of a Christian College. On a day-to-day basis, the role will involve teaching in the Counselling programme, mentoring of students and provision of leadership for group process groups.
ABOUT YOU
We are looking for people who care deeply about developing theologically reflective, ethically robust and effective counselling practitioners.
Our ideal applicants for these opportunities will bring the following skillsets and experience:
- Models a faith to others that is personally vibrant, Christ-centred, evangelical and deeply shaped by the Scriptures.
- A minimum of a Masters qualification, preferably a doctorate, in Theology Counselling or another relevant discipline.
- Strong ability to deliver pedagogically excellent teaching across two or more of our schools, that is characterised by deeply integrated Christian thought.
- Active Counselling/Psychology registration with NZCCA, NZAC or NZ Psychologists Board, or with equivalent international body
- Experienced practitioner with an understanding of the counselling field
In addition, the Head of Counselling role requires high levels of emotional intelligence and cultural competency, with a proven track record of success in leading and building collaborative teams. Experience building and nurturing relationships with external stakeholders is advantageous.
