Laidlaw College announces new Head of Theology

Dr Myk Habets

Laidlaw College is pleased to announce that we have appointed Dr Myk Habets as our new Head of Theology, commencing in Semester Two 2019.

Myk is an alumnus of Laidlaw College, with a Bachelor of Ministries and a Masters in Theology from BCNZ, followed by a PhD through Otago University. He is currently Dean of Faculty at Carey Baptist College, having taught and researched there since 2005.

Myk is a distinguished systematic theologian with an extensive and well-regarded track record, and describes himself as a Doctor Serviens Ecclesiae – a teacher in service of the church. We are thrilled at the energy and vision for theological education that he will bring in leadership at Laidlaw, and delighted to welcome him back into our College team and community.

In Myk’s own words, “In many ways this is a homecoming for me, back to my alma mater. I am looking forward to the opportunities and challenges this new role will bring and being a part of Laidlaw's dynamic vision for theological education in Aotearoa NZ and beyond.”

“Myk brings a deep sense of theological conviction and a vision for forming leaders for the church and beyond that aligns wonderfully with Laidlaw College’s mission. We are privileged to have him join our team in a timely season for Laidlaw, and look forward to co-labouring in new ways in service of the Gospel.” – Dr Roshan Allpress, National Principal/CEO

“Myk’s appointment is a decisive statement about the future of Laidlaw. To the College’s highly competent team he brings a welcome blend of bold confidence, academic depth and strategic acumen.” – Dr Matthew Scott, Senior Pastor, Lifepoint Church, and National Governing Council representative on the selection committee.

“We are looking forward to engaging with Myk in our ongoing project of integrating theology and social practice. He will bring new dimensions to this conversation.” – Lisa Spriggens, Head of Counselling - School of Social Practice.

“Myk brings to the Laidlaw School of Theology faithful teaching, engaged scholarship, and a passion for the Gospel that will inspire and inform students, faculty and the wider Laidlaw community.” – Dr Stephen Garner, Academic Dean.

“I have admired both Myk's academic prowess and public teaching skills for some time. It is a great privilege to have him joining the team at Laidlaw College." – Graham Burt, Chair, National Governing Council.
