Laidlaw College Launches New Bachelor of Arts Te Tohu Paetahi for 2027
We are delighted to announce the launch of a new Bachelor of Arts Te Tohu Paetahi (BA), a flexible three-year degree designed to meet the growing demand for an integrated, faith-grounded humanities education that prepares graduates for real-world vocation.
Opening for enrolment in 2027, the BA brings together academic rigour, Christian formation, and practical, field-based learning across four specialisations: History, Te Reo Māori, Theology, and Youth Work. Students can also combine two specialisations — pairing, for example, Theology with Youth Work, or History with Te Reo Māori — to build a hybrid pathway tailored to their calling.
The degree has been developed through significant strategic and academic collaboration across the College, drawing together courses and expertise from multiple Schools to create a single, coherent student experience. The Te Reo Māori specialisation is delivered in partnership with Te Wānanga Ihorangi.
"This programme captures the heart of what Laidlaw is called to do," says Rev. Dr Maja Whitaker, BA Programme Lead. "I'm passionate about the BA because it forms whole people, not just graduates. It creates space for students to integrate faith, identity, intellect, and vocation — so that what they believe and how they live are deeply aligned. Whether someone is called to teaching, youth work, ministry, public service, or further study, this degree equips them with the confidence, clarity, and capability to step into that calling. Most of all, I'm excited because this programme will shape people who can lead thoughtfully, serve faithfully, and contribute meaningfully to Aotearoa and beyond."
Unlike many humanities degrees, faith is woven through every course in the BA rather than offered as an elective add-on. The programme also features small, relational class sizes and built-in practicum experience — including 120 credits of practicum for students specialising in Youth Work.
The BA is designed for students who are still discerning their next step, want a broader humanities education, or are looking to combine theology with another field of study. Graduates can go on to further pathways including a Graduate Diploma in Education (Secondary), a Graduate Diploma in Theology, ministry and community leadership roles, or postgraduate study.
Students can study on campus at Laidlaw's Henderson or Christchurch sites, with flexible options including Distance Learning courses and part-time study.
Applications for 2027 open 22 June 2026, with Expressions of Interest for the Te Reo Māori specialisation opening 8 June 2026. The BA is accredited and approved for StudyLink support.
